Man-Made Animals:
Self in the Other
an online Pavilion of the 6th Wrong Biennale
Since cave paintings, the earliest documentations of art by humans, animals have never left human's
artworks. Whether they are depicted in pigments from mineral stones or binary data, the renderings of
the animals are shaped by the latest technologies by humans and the environments we are in. In a
phenomenological sense, animals for humans are never animals per se; they are partially man-made, as an
externalized version of psychological and philosophical “self”, or as “the other,” something alien and
unfathomable, or, most likely, both.
With these thoughts in mind, SXSY Collective presents a series of artworks featuring animal-related works
of various media – from painting to sculpture to video to participatory and interactive work by a group
of local and international artists – all inside a 3D video game directly accessible in a browser. The
virtual gallery space for the exhibition is a replica of the SXSY Office on the 46th floor of a
skyscraper in downtown Chengdu, a metropolitan in Southwest China with a population of 20 million
people. Confined in an awkwardly urban and limited space in a supposedly infinite virtual space, the
viewers are confronted with animal works that press them to think about the relationships between the
viewers, the artists, the animals, and the space, discovering "self" in various types of "other."
